H. H. Franklin Club Dedicates New Collection Facility

On May 15 the H. H. Franklin Club Inc. dedicated a new 7,000 square foot facility at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Hills, Michigan. The all-new Franklin Automobile Collection is housed in a re-creation of the famed Hamlin Franklin dealership in Los Angeles, California circa 1910. The dealership was owned by Ralph Hamlin, the former bicycle racer who became Franklin's west coast distributor and the firm's largest and most successful dealer.

The new museum houses some rare automobiles including a Franklin Model A runabout - the first

four-cylinder car built in America.

The new museum houses some rare automobiles including a Franklin Model A runabout - the first four-cylinder car built in America.

Of the 150,000 Franklins built between 1902 and 1934, it's estimated that about 3,700 have survived.

The Franklin collection evolved after enthusiast Bob Kern and his wife Patricia began thinking about a permanent home for their Franklin cars and literature. With the advice of Franklin friends the idea of a museum began to germinate. Ground was broken in May 2009 and, now 18 months later the dream has materialized. The Gilmore Car Museum is currently in its 44th season, open daily from May 1 through October. 31. Visit their website: www.GilmoreCarMuseum.org

More information on the H. H. Franklin Club can be found on their website: http://www.franklincar.org

ACC is pleased to see a growing trend of more and more collecting clubs and associations developing museums, permanent displays and archives relating to the collecting areas they support. This is a key contribution to the entire antiques and collectibles industry on behalf of these clubs.

Annual Ohio Valley China Collectors' Convention Begins on June 25

The Ohio Valley China Collectors will be holding their 17th Annual Convention at the Salvation Army Hall in historic downtown East Liverpool, Ohio from June 24-26. This is a convention for the collectors of china manufactured by potters in the Ohio Valley area. Although there are only two operating potteries in the area today, at one time there were more than 100 working potteries turning out thousands of pieces of china daily. The theme for this year's convention is early pottery such as majolica, yellowware, white ware and rockingham.

Events at the convention include an open house, a welcoming breakfast, a live and silent auction, a pottery market, three lectures on china and presentations by collectors of their collections, and a closing dinner.

For complete information on the convention, visit the website: http://home.roadrunner.com/~mlblack/default.htmlor call 216.382.2538

Admission Prices at Club-Sponsored Shows

ACC continues to receive comments from the leadership of collecting clubs relating to the best way to fairly charge for their show admissions, while still making their show financially profitable. There isn't an easy answer - or at least a right or wrong answer.

To begin, any show - no matter whether its a new show or an established one - takes a lot of time and planning. And, there are few options for revenue other than admissions and dealer booth/table spaces. Yet there are a number of expenses involved including promotion, security, facility costs, signage and badges to name just a few.

Naturally, one of the successes of a show is the volume of walk-in traffic beyond the standard group of club members who "always" come to the show. The more potential buyers coming through the doors, the happier your dealers will be. And, if you have more dealers... with "fresh" merchandise, the more likelihood that show sales will be good and that the buyer will return for your next show.

We are seeing all kinds of combinations of admission fees being used by clubs. If it is a multi-day show, some are offering package deals for the whole show or a discounted rate for second or third day.

Some show managers are offering family admissions, free or reduced admissions for students, for young collectors accompanied by a parent or adult, senior citizens, and active military personnel. Interestingly, few clubs offer a show admission discount to their own club members.

Although "Early Bird" admissions have been offered by club-sponsored shows for years, there are other clubs who are totally opposed to any sort of early admission offer. ACC's long standing opinion on early entry admissions has always been that if you're going to offer early entry, make it worth your while. To have a general admission of $2-3 and then offer early admission for $5 makes little economic sense. If show-goers are allowed in early to scan the merchandise for the "goodies" before the general public is allowed in, they need to pay well for this privilege.

Recently reviewing some of the early entry options in one group of club shows - those hosted by antique bottle clubs - we find some interesting varieties. One of the options we like best is that of the Deland M-T Bottle Club of Deland, Florida. They charge an early entry fee of $20, and no fee for show day at all.

Dwight Pettit, vice president of the club, says that he and Club President Brian Hoblick, came up with the idea which was implemented at their 40th anniversary show this spring. Dwight says "all the Florida bottle shows, except Deland, and all the antique collectible shows in Florida, charge an entry fee, and all the bottle shows also charge an early entry fee before show day on Saturday: Tallahassee charges $15 early entry, Sarasota $15, St. Pete $15 and Jacksonville $25, plus charging a modest entry fee to the general public on show day."

Dwight explains, "we felt it was necessary that if a buyer coming to our show that wanted to get "first pick" on all the goodies we were selling before show day, they should pay for that privilege. Why should they get in early and not pay for that right. And, also another main reason was because they were getting in the way of dealers trying to set up their tables on Friday for the Saturday show. It was getting really bad where buyers were getting in the way of dealers setting up. Our current policy: Only dealers are allowed in between the hours of 12 noon and 3pm on Friday for set up time. Early buyers are allowed in from 3pm on. All dealers, helpers and club members must wear a name tag. This way we had no one sneaking into the show. Early buyers were given a red name tag stating "Early Buyer" and anyone without a name tag was escorted out or had to pay the early buyer fee, no exceptions. It went very well... not to mention we made an extra $500 for the bottle club!"

On a personal note, Dwight says, "I have been going to bottle shows in England, Europe and the USA for over 45 years. And all the shows are charging an early entry fee. So it is justified and a good idea. Me being a collector of Antique Case Gin bottles for 50 years, I never hesitate or question an early entry fee. As a specific bottle specialist I want to get in and see what's for offer before the other, perhaps less serious collectors arrive and fill up the show." Dwight can be reached at: pettit9119@bellsouth.net

It appears as if for many club-sponsored shows, early entry fees not only make sense... and can add to the revenue base, but is a preferred choice for the serious collector who may have traveled a great distance to attend the show and wants the "first option" of seeing the merchandise. For this scenario, certainly $20 is not a major fee. And, if it can work successfully so you can allow your general public to attend the show with free admission, all the better!

We would like to hear from other club-sponsored show managers on this topic. What are your experiences? Are you thinking of trying something new to bring in larger audiences, keep your dealers happy, and increase revenue for the club? Send your comments to: info@collectors.org

Free Starter Kit for Kids at Political Memorabilia Show

Children at the Titusville, New Jersey Political Memorabilia Show in May were able to learn how the political system works and start a fun new collection first hand.

Tony Lee, president of the American Political Items Collectors' New York "Big Apple" chapter, which hosts the show, explains, "every child 12 years or younger who attended the show received a free collecting case when he or she arrived and the youngster could carry that case to every participating dealer in the room to receive one free political button.

"Collecting political buttons is a great way to learn about American history, and by offering free buttons and a case to every kid who attended, our hope was to ignite new interest in American politics among our area's children."

Some of the other political memorabilia shows also offer free buttons to the kids attending, but the idea of the collecting case and dealer involvement completes the package. Free appraisals were also offered for all political items brought to the Titusville show. Tony can be reached at tony@adicio.com

Bookmark Collectors Hold Virtual Convention

There are hundreds of collecting club conventions held each year in all parts of the country... or the world for that matter. Applying 21st Century technology to the convention model - the virtual convention - may be the next logical step.

On February 20-21, 2010 the first convention for bookmark collectors took place online. For 24 hours, bookmark collectors from all over the world met to give and attend seminars, view galleries, shop, swap, and socialize with other collectors and enthusiasts. For many collectors, this was the first time they had the opportunity to meet and discuss their passion with other enthusiasts, live.

Starting on Saturday morning, February 20 (PST), six speakers presented seven different talks. Most of the talks were given twice, and they filled three 6-hour sessions. The presentations were the core of the convention. Not just because of the quality and breadth of the presentations, but because the presentation tool used encouraged chatting between the attendees during and between the presentations. The time between sessions was an opportunity to get to know the other attendees and talk about the convention. This turned out to be tremendously successful.

At the same time, a set of photo galleries were available for viewing, and they grew as more participants submitted photos from their own collections.

The forums were actively used and were a place for the attendees to introduce themselves and leave a short bio, point out problems and make suggestions, respond to classified ads, append additional information from the talks, and socialize outside of the presentation tool. The Bookmark Society presented a couple of poster papers, along with the transcripts and recordings from the presentations on file for the attendees to download.

There were attendees from 12 different countries and 5 continents. Social interaction was easy and an important success of the convention. There was an over-riding educational component, an opportunity for collectors to share their own collections, and a marketplace for people to shop with vendors.

For more information on the convention write to: Alan Irwin at: info@bmcvc.com or Lauren Roberts at: lauren@bmcvc.com

SPECIAL NOTE: For clubs experiencing difficulties with attendance or volunteers to run your traditional club convention, perhaps considering a virtual convention is an answer. Or, you may attempt to supplement your regular convention with an additional virtual convention once or twice during the year. Please let ACC know if you have attempted a virtual convention or are considering doing so. Thanks. Write to: info@collectors.org

Does Your Collecting Area Have a Designated National Day or Week?

Last month the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 513 (S. Res. 513) to designate July 9 "Collector Car Appreciation Day." The Automotive Restoration Market Organizations pushed the resolution as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

As part of "Collector Car Appreciation Day," a variety of events are currently being scheduled. For a listing, contact Jim Skelly, SEMA Council director (Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association) at 909.396.0289. This is just the latest of a growing list of special collecting days.

ACC knows that there are a number of other designated collecting days and weeks that exist - some "official" and perhaps some "not official". If your club or association supports a collecting area which has a designated day, week or month, please let us know about it and when it occurs. Write to: info@collectors.org Thanks.

Every Collector Should Have Collector Insurance

One of the best services any collecting club can offer your membership is to provide convenient ways to have their collections properly insured. Far too many collectors... even those with very significant collections, have no insurance protection beyond their homeowners policy, and this isn't enough.

The Association of Collecting Clubs and National Association of Collectors have both endorsed an excellent insurance program since the time the two associations were started. This Collector Insurance is provided by the Association Insurance Administrators of Davidson, North Carolina. They also provide insurance policies for antique malls and shops, antique dealer insurance and coverage for antique shows. Serving the antiques and collectibles industry with quality insurance is their expertise.

We highly endorse this insurance program for collectors and urge you to take a look at what it offers. Go to: http://Insurance.Collectors.Orgfor full information on coverage, rates and applications. For collectors, where can you get $20,000 in coverage for only $75.00 a year? Or, how about $100,000 worth for $288.00/year or $200,000 worth for $538.00/year?

For more information on the insurance, or to request quantities of insurance brochures/applications for your club membership, contact the Association Insurance Administrators. Ask for Angie Becker, President, and let her know you are an ACC or NAC member. Call Angie at 704.895.9088 or 800.287.7127 or e-mail: angie@acna.us The AIA website is: http://www.ACNA.US
